McCoy Tyner & The Charles Tolliver Big Band Africa/Brass
FEATURING:
McCoy Tyner, piano
Charles Tolliver, trumpet
Other musicians, TBA

Tonight at the Blue Note, pianist of the original John Coltrane Quartet McCoy Tyner will join forces with trumpeter Charles Tolliver and his big band to recreate the music of Coltrane's seminal 1961 album Africa/Brass just over 50 years after its release. The recording, featuring arrangements and orchestrations by Tyner and Eric Dolphy, was Coltrane's first of numerous releases for the Impulse! label.

McCoy Tyner's blues-based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand, has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. Born in 1938 in Philadelphia, Tyner became a part of the fertile jazz and R&B scene of the early '50s. At 17, he began a career-changing relationship with Miles Davis sideman John Coltrane. Tyner joined Coltrane for the classic album My Favorite Things (1960) and remained at the core of what became one of the most seminal groups in jazz history, the John Coltrane Quartet.

In the summer of 2005, Tyner joined forces with the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York and became the first client of Blue Note Management. In 2007, his partnership with the Blue Note led to the formation of his own record label, McCoy Tyner Music. His critically-acclaimed releases on the new label, including Quartet (2007), a CD/DVD titled Guitars (2008), and Solo (2009), are the most recent in a catalog that includes over 80 albums to his name. Tyner has earned four Grammy Awards and was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2002.

An entirely self-taught musician, Charles Tolliver is a remarkable talent who has gained an outstanding reputation as a trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, and educator. Born in 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida, his musical career began at the age of eight when his beloved grandmother Lela presented him with his first instrument, a cornet, and the inspiration to learn.

In 2007, Tolliver's recording With Love was nominated for a Grammy and marked a resurgence in his career. The Jazz Journalists Association presented him with the Best Large Ensemble of the Year 2007 award for his new tour de force group, The Charles Tolliver Big Band. His newest big band CD, titled Emperor March, was recorded live at the Blue Note in New York City and was released by Half Note Records in March 2009.
