Winner of the Van Lier Fellowship, Darius Jones is an alto saxophonist, composer, and producer who joined the New York music community in 2005. He co-leads Little Women, a band with Travis LaPlante, Andrew Smiley, and Jazon Nazary that released its debut, titled Throat, in 2010. He also collaborates regularly with numerous artists and groups, including Trevor Dunn's Proof Readers, Angelica Sanchez, William Parker, Mike Pride's From Bacteria to Boys, Taylor Ho Bynum, William Hooker, Ben Gerstein, and many others.
Jones signed to AUM Fidelity in 2009 and released his highly acclaimed debut as a leader, Man'ish Boy (A Raw and Beautiful Thing), in October of that year. His releases during 2011 include Cosmic Lieder, the first manifestation of his profound collaboration with pianist and composer Matthew Shipp, and Big Gurl (Smell My Dream), his second album with his long-standing trio. His latest album, Book of Mę'bul (Another Kind of Sunrise), came out this spring.
