It has been said that Ethiopian singer-songwriter Wayna possesses a voice that is as sweet and pure as it is honest and passionate. After leaving a job with the Clinton administration to pursue her music career, she began working with legendary studio producers Bill Laswell, Eran Tabib, and Veit Renn; collaborated with W. Ellington Felton, Kenn Starr, Kev Brown, Cy Young, and Tamara Wellons; opened for Fantasia, Amerie, Common, Bobby Valentino, Jaguar Wright, Kindred, and Chuck Brown; and released two albums, Moments of Clarity, Book 1 (2004) and Higher Ground (2008).
2009 saw Wayna's success skyrocket. Her single "Moonlight Rendezvous" charted on Billboard for seven consecutive weeks, peaking at No. 3 on the Hot R&B Singles chart. The follow-up single "My Love" spent six consecutive weeks on Billboard, peaking at No. 2 on the same chart. She closed out the year by garnering a Grammy nomination for her remake "Lovin You (Music)" featuring Kokayi. The song is a fitting representation of Wayna's dynamic musical style, a blend of Minnie Riperton, Lauryn Hill, and Billie Holiday.
Tonight, Wayna performs a tribute to Holiday, an artist whose influence factors so critically in her own unique style.
