SPONTANEOUS CONSTRUCTION: Dave King & David Torn Duo
FEATURING:
Dave King, drums
David Torn, guitar/effects

Spontaneous Construction Presented by Search & Restore is a series based on jazz's most important and distinctive element: improvisation. For each Friday night at 12:30am, ensembles are created from a pool of musicians ranging from up-and-coming to legendary, hand-picked to perform as a group for the first time. No rules or boundaries exist - the artists are free to create music on the spot as they see fit. After 30 years as one of the finest jazz club's in the world, the Spontaneous Construction Series brings back the feel of the old Blue Note Late Night Jam Sessions, but with a new and forward-thinking concept.

TONIGHT'S SPONTANEOUS CONSTRUCTION WILL FEATURE:

DAVE KING

Dave King was born on June 8, 1970 in Menneapolis, MN. He studied piano at 5 years old and picked up the drums at age 9. He started his career as a session musician in Los Angeles from 1990 to '95 and moved to New York where he co-founded the popular jazz/rock trio The Bad Plus with Reid Anderson and Ethan Iverson. He has performed all over the world with notable musicians like Dewey Redman, Tim Berne, Jeff Beck, Hank Roberts, Dead Prez, Boots Riley, Chris Speed, Craig Taborn, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Meat Beat Manifesto, Mason Jennings, and many more. He also composed the music for the award-winning animated short film "Bike Ride Story" as well as the feature film "Hohokam." With The Bad Plus, he has performed on Conan O'Brien and the CBS Show "This Morning."King is also a fine pianist, a skill which he displays on his solo recording Indelicate (Sunnyside, 2010).

DAVID TORN:

David Torn is a composer, texturalist, guitarist, producer & whatnot of actual international stature, renowned for his unique musical voice which seems to span and un-define a range of idioms and styles. His characterful and compositionally textural work has had material impact and influence upon both film scoring - through his own scores, in addition to his creative contributions to scores by Carter Burwell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cliff Martinez, Howard Shore, Mark Isham and others; - and generally, upon contemporary electric, electro-acoustic and electronic music. In addition to the medium of film scoring, David's creative contributions have continued to grace and assist the works of other musical artists-of-note as diverse as David Bowie, Tim Berne, Jeff Beck, Mick Karn, David Sylvian, John Legend, Tori Amos, Sting, Madonna, Meshell Ndegeocello, John Popper, Jan Garbarek, Jarboe, Laurie Anderson, Kaki King, KD Lang, Chocolate Genius, Don Cherry, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tony Levin, Andy Rinehart, Dave Douglas, Manu Katche and more. David was educated by Leonard Bernstein (Music for Young Composers) and privately by John Abercrombie, Pat Martino, Paul Weiss, and Arthur Basile. He has been the recipient of many awards, including a Grammy for a Jeff Beck recording which David composed and mixed. In 2006, David returned to recording for Manfred Eicher and ECM Records.

ABOUT SEARCH & RESTORE:

Search & Restore is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to uniting and developing the audience for new jazz music. Founded by Adam Schatz in 2007, S&R does anything and everything to spread the incredible music being made in New York City at this very moment, driven by creative melodic approach and incredible improvisers, through concert presentation (including the Winter Jazzfest & Undead Jazzfest) and web development (SearchAndRestore.com). In December, they successfully raised $75,000 through Kickstarter to spend 2011 filming over 200 concerts throughout the city and building artist pages for every musician filmed, creating the first content-based site to focus on new jazz, and a true point of discovery for new and current fans alike. So….get ready for that.
