|S.C.: Steven Bernstein / Colin Stetson / Vicente Archer / Dan Weiss
Spontaneous Construction Presented by Search & Restore is a series based on jazz's most important and distinctive element: improvisation. For each Friday night at 12:30am, ensembles are created from a pool of musicians ranging from up-and-coming to legendary, hand-picked to perform as a group for the first time. No rules or boundaries exist - the artists are free to create music on the spot as they see fit. After 30 years as one of the finest jazz club's in the world, the Spontaneous Construction Series brings back the feel of the old Blue Note Late Night Jam Sessions, but with a new and forward-thinking concept.
Steven Bernstein, trumpet
Colin Stetson, saxophones/clarinet

TONIGHT'S SPONTANEOUS CONSTRUCTION WILL FEATURE:
Steven Bernstein is a trumpeter/slide trumpeter, bandleader, arranger, and composer who lives outside of musical convention. He has recently released three critically acclaimed CDs – Diaspora Soul, Diaspora Blues (featuring the SamRivers trio), and his most recent, Diaspora Hollywood. His band Sex Mob has been together since 1995 touring the world, won numerous awards, and has had their music featured on MTV, Saturday Night Live and NPR. Sexotica, recorded for Thirsty Ear’s Blue series, and produced by Good and Evil is their most recent release. His nine-piece ensemble, the Millennial Territory Orchestra, recently released their debut recording, MTO Vol. 1 on Sunnyside records. Since November 2004 Bernstein has been a member of the Levon Helm band, playing at the Midnight Rambles in Levon’s home in Woodstock.
Drummer Dan Weiss has performed and or recorded with David Binney, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer, Miguel Zenon, Wayne Krantz, Kenny Werner, Ritchie Beirach, Ben Monder, Uri Caine, Village Vanguard Orchestra, Ravi Coltrane and many others. He has been touring Europe and North America extensively for the past seven years with many different projects. Dan has been studying tabla for the last nine years exclusively under the guidance of his guru Pandit Samir Chatterjee. Weiss has two recordings under his own name. One is a solo recording which contains traditional tabla repertoire adapted to the drumset in a classical manner. Dan's most recent recording is a trio cd which includes Jacob Sacks on piano and Thomas Morgan on bass featuring his compositions.
Vicente was born in Woodstock, NY, and here he embraced the rich cultural arts of this historical town by listening to local great jazz artists Dave Holland, Jimmy Cobb, Jack DeJohnette, among many others. He began his musical career on guitar at age sixteen primarily self-taught, learning from his parents Wes Montgomery and George Benson records. After his first year at NEC, Vicente transferred to Boston's Northeastern University where he switched from guitar to acoustic bass. Within one year of switching to the bass, Donald Harrison thought so highly of Vicente skills that he used him on his Impulse! release, Free to Be. While still in college, Vicente also began performing in the Eric Reed Trio. Vicente Archer has emerged as one of today's profound new voices on the bass. He presently divides his duties playing with Robert Glasper and Nicholas Payton.
Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI and earned a degree in music from his hometown school, the University of Michigan, in 1997. Since 2007, Colin has made his home in Montréal, Canada. Throughout the past decade Stetson has developed his unique solo voice on saxophones and clarinets, culminating in the 2008 release of his debut solo record New History Warfare Vol. 1. His second solo album New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges is due for release in February 2011 on Constellation, co-produced by Shahzad Ismaily and mixed by Ben Frost. Stetson chiefly plays assorted saxophones and clarinets, but is also adept at cornet, french horn and flute. Aside from his work as a soloist, Stetson has recorded extensively for other artists and joined a number of live bands as a full member or guest. These include Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Fiest, Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, David Byrne, Jolie Holland, Sinead O'Connor, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, and Anthony Braxton.
ABOUT SEARCH & RESTORE:
Search & Restore is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to uniting and developing the audience for new jazz music. Founded by Adam Schatz in 2007, S&R does anything and everything to spread the incredible music being made in New York City at this very moment, driven by creative melodic approach and incredible improvisers, through concert presentation (including the Winter Jazzfest & Undead Jazzfest) and web development (SearchAndRestore.com). In December, they successfully raised $75,000 through Kickstarter to spend 2011 filming over 200 concerts throughout the city and building artist pages for every musician filmed, creating the first content-based site to focus on new jazz, and a true point of discovery for new and current fans alike. So….get ready for that.
