Timeless, cross-genre musical miracles are created when the right singer connects with the right producer at the right moment. And in the same way, Doc serves as the Yin to Res' Yang on the enchanting singer's captivating solo debut How I Do, a musically adventurous tapestry of sound that reflects her unique background.
Res grew up listening to her parents' Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Teddy Pendergrass albums at home. She also developed an appreciation for groups like the Eurythmics, Jimi Hendrix, and Marianne Faithful while attending the Academy of Notre Dame, an all girls Catholic college prep school. But Res remembers finding her lifelong passion for music at the age of seven, when she was first enrolled in voice lessons. Res developed so quickly that she began singing Italian arias from operas at age 14, and continued for several years.
While in her second year at Temple University, Res started working on songs and signed with a manager. She eventually relocated to Manhattan, and began working on a mixture of soul, hip hop and rock songs that eventually became her first album.
She started her major label career by participating in two critically- acclaimed project:singing the chorus on the title track from labelmate GZA's sophomore solo album, Beneath The Surface, and contributing guest vocals on "Too Late", a trippy, atmospheric cut on Talib Kweli & Hi Tek's Reflection Eternal. Res found Minneapolis-bred beat maker Doc, the missing link to her sound, after a friend turned her onto Esthero's Breath From Another--another Doc Project.
Golden Boys and They Say Vision videos had heavy rotation on VH1, VH1 Soul as well as MTV. Her second single"They Say Vision" which hit number one on the billboard dance chart and no.37 on the Hot 100 Singles chart solidified Res as a powerful force to be heard. Later she released Ice King with a remix featuring Nas. Res did a remake of Jefferson Airplane song titled "Miracles" for the movie Maid in Manhattan (Starring Jennifer Lopez).Shortly after, she also became a poster child for Marc Ecko's "Ecko Red" clothing line and appeared in print advertising.
During a four year hiatus Res travelled the world to many third world countries. " Cuba, by far was the most exciting place I have ever been" says Res While in Cuba she was apart of a press conference, that spoke upon cultural exchanges between musicians in the United States and Cuba. During her stay she performed live with grammy award winning artists ,The Roots. Shortly after, Res moved to Santa Monica, California where she became inspired by her new surroundings, and musical influences, including members from legendary band Fishbone, Mark Batson(who produced Seal,Eminem,U2,Pink,Beyonce), Colin Wolfe(Dallas Austin, Korn) Dr. Dre and DJ Khalil(Jay-Z,The Game, 50 Cent). It was perfect timing to start a monthly event called Sunday Nite Res, which is named after one of her most compelling new songs, produced by long time collaborator Doc. Res went back in the studio, while MCA Records went under, she was brought over to the newly formed Geffen Records. Res took control of what was to be her sophomore album Black Girls Rock! She began working with her favorite producers and musicians. After months of waiting for Geffen Records to become settled and a functioning label, Res grew less and less patient with the constant hiring and firing of key persons at Geffen Records and decided to ask for her release from the label.
But soon after she was asked by Cee- Lo of Gnarls Barkley to be apart of Gnarls Barkley touring band and sing supporting vocals for their debut album St.Elswhere. "That was a ride I will never forget, we performed in places like New Zealand, Australia, Japan, all throughout Europe and the United States...in the most ridiculous costumes!" While on tour, Res took any down time she had and began writing more songs. One of which, she recently released on the Akeelah and The Bee (starring Keke palmer, Laurence Fishboourne and Angela Bassett) movie soundtrack called "To Empower".
After the year and a half long tour with Gnarls Barkley , Res began a residency at The Mint in Hollywood. There once a month she performed to a packed house, filled with her loyal fan base, who have been waiting for something new and fresh to arrive in Hollywood. Her performance style varies. She likes to perform with a full band, a DJ or with an acoustic guitar player. Her voice carries a tremendous vibe that satisfies your soul. She doesn't seem to favor complacency and is one of the few artists on who is willing to challenge ideas and social norms. The music is certainly what will make Res famous, but it is her lyrics and voice that is the lasting legacy. Res is always conquering new territory in music and have recently paired up with Talib Kweli and Graph Nobel to form the group Idle Warship.
