When these stellar jazz stars get together to salute their friend, mentor and late, great bandleader, Dizzy Gillespie, it’s always a party. Dizzy, one of the fathers of bebop and world’s most renowned trumpet players, performed and recorded with most of the greatest in jazz including Billy Eckstine, Cab Calloway, Charlie Parker, Earl Hines, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughan, Coleman Hawkins, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. His own bands featured some of today’s leading musicians who are illustrious leaders in their own right.

This Alumni All-star Band has no choice but to be tight and right – Dizzy would stand for nothing less and all of the members have performed with each other in a variety of musical configurations. At one time or another, many of the members have held a chair in the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, the Dizzy Gillespie United Nation Orchestra or an all-star band saluting Dizzy and other jazz giants. It is safe to say, there are no strangers in this band.

Under the direction of trombone master Slide Hampton, the band will surely shine with some slick arrangements and hot improvisations. Get more of the swing and groove from featured guests: saxmen James Moody, Jimmy Heath, Frank Wess and Antonio Hart and trumpet masters Randy Brecker and Claudio Roditi. Rounding out the band are Gary Smulyan, baritone sax; Gregory Gisbert and Frank Greene, trumpet; Steve Davis, Jay Ashby, Jason Jackson and Douglas Purviance, trombone; Marty Ashby, guitar; John Lee, bass; Dennis Mackrel, drums; vocalist Roberta Gambarini; and ------, piano.
