THE ACE(Afro-Caribbean-Experimental)COLLECTIVE
Over the past two decades, Panamanian born Jorge Sylvester has been integrating Afro-Caribbean rhythms and modern concepts that go way beyond the mainstream. The ACE (Afro Caribbean Experimental) Collective utilizes the rich spectrum of rhythms from the Caribbean and other Latin American countries as a vehicle to create new and undiscovered rhythmic melodic lines.
The ACE Collective was formed in 2003 and is based off of a compositional concept originally developed by Jorge Sylvester in 2000 for his ACE Trio (saxophone, electric bass and drums) which resulted in an exceptionally innovative CD entitled In The Ear of The Beholder, released in 2002 on JazzMagnet Records. "There are no cliched romantic notions of breezy island music on this bold adventureJohn Murphy/Jazz Times Magazine. The Collective was formed when Sylvester expanded his original concept to include experimenting with other variables - first, with the addition of vocal artist, composer, poet, Nora McCarthy and most recently, vibraphonist, Monte Croft and trumpeter, Waldron Ricks.
Sylvester chose Noras voice because of its similarity in sound and spirit to the horn and for her versatility within the context of the instrumentation as well as for her unique improvisational and interpretative abilities. McCarthy born in Cleveland, Ohio is a prolific creative artist whose poetry and lyrics put a tangible image to Sylvesters compositions. The two have an inspired musical symbiosis which underlies the identity of the Collective.
Vibraphonist Monte Croft, born in Kansas City, is a well-seasoned, multi-faceted and broadly talented jazz musician with roots in R&B and funk. A long-time collaborator of Sylvesters, Monte Croft appeared on Sylvesters first CD as a leader, MusiCollage, Arkadia, 1996.
Trumpeter Waldron Ricks was raised in Detroit, Michigan and educated in the jazz tradition. He brings his beautiful soulful tone and outstanding musicianship to the Collective. Currently he performs in several projects with Jorge Sylvester and Nora McCarthy including their 20-piece orchestra ConceptualMotion as well as with his own quartet and alongside many jazz notables.
Drummer extraordinaire Montez Coleman was born in St. Louis, MO. Three years ago he moved to New York only to become one of the most sought after drummers at the moment. He has played with many great jazz musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Russell Malone, Bruce Barth, etc.
Gene Torres, electric bassist, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York began playing bass in 1969. He covers a wide range of styles from Hip-Hop, Funk and R&B to Jazz, Rock, Salsa, Bebop and Brazilian. Influenced by many of the greats such as James Jamerson, Larry Graham, Ron Carter, Scott LaFaro, Jaco Pastorius and Anthony Jackson he brings with him a long history in the music as well as a large repository of eclectic grooves to the Collective.
The ACE Collective's unique sound and compositional approach is on the forefront of today's musical scene reaching into the future and creating new music in the African Caribbean tradition.
