HANK JONES
Hank Jones, renowned pianist and composer, was born in Vicksburg, MS, in 1918 and grew up in Pontiac, MI, with talented younger brothers, Thad and Elvin Jones. He played in bands in Michigan, Ohio and Buffalo, NY, before moving to New York City in 1943 where his first gig was with Hot Lips Page at the Onyx Club on 52nd Street. Jones went on to work with Billy Eckstine, Coleman Hawkins, Howard McGhee, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Lewis, Teddy Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Clark Terry and Ella Fitzgerald as well as touring worldwide with Jazz at the Philharmonic.
Jones continued earning rave reviews and new fans in concert; on television as a CBS staff musician for stars including Andy Williams, Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason and Carol Burnett; on radio with Arthur Godfrey, Jack Sterling and others; and on Broadway in “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” He also leads his own dynamic bands at concert halls, clubs, festivals, universities and other venues around the world. Last year, he released two CDs, “The Trio” and “Just Friends,” and “Talented Touch/Porgy & Bess” is due out this month. Hank Jones is not renowned because of the many great musicians with whom he has worked, but because of his stellar mastery of the piano and the beautiful music he makes.
KENNY WERNER
Widely acclaimed for his re-harmonizations and transcendent touch, Werner was born in Brooklyn, NY, November 19, 1951. He stepped into the limelight at age four as a member of a song and dance group; and by the time he was 11, he had recorded a single with a 15-piece orchestra and appeared on television playing stride piano.
A powerful and passionate player, he has performed around the world with Ron Carter, Joe Williams, Sonny Fortune, Peter Erskine, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden, Joe Lovano and other jazz greats. Werner’s releases as a leader include PEACE, his debut on Half Note Records, a subsidiary of the Blue Note.
His book, Effortless Mastery, has helped many musicians change concepts of how to practice, play and listen. Touring and recording together for years, Werner, Hoenig and Weidenmuller are a perfect package that couldn’t be wrapped any neater. |
