BABA ISRAEL

Baba Israel was raised in New York City by parents who were core members of the Living Theatre. He developed as a young artist exploring spoken word, Hip Hop, and experimental performance. He lived in Australia in the ‘90s working on major community theatre projects, Hip Hop festivals and co-founded the group Meta Bass 'n Breath.

In 2000 he connected with producer/ multi-instrumentalist/ beatboxer/ graffiti artist Yako 440 forming a close friendship and performance collaboration, in support of Baba’s solo album Mind Music released on Velour Records. Baba Israel + Yako 440 went on to release 3 albums independently (Force of Life, Beatbox Dub Poetics, & Highest Degree EP) and the 12” Force of Life” through the Bay Area label Widehive, and have since toured across North and South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. They are also both master level arts educators and have led workshops at home and abroad.

One of Baba and Yako’s early experiences co-teaching was at a community center in NYC call The Door, where they met then 17 year old vocalist Duv. There was an instant chemistry, and after featuring Duv on their albums, co-produced his solo debut Urban Artistik. Duv went on to perform at venues such as the Blue Note, Highline Ballroom, and the Bowery Poetry Club, becoming a pillar of NYCs downtown soul/R&B music scene.

In 2009 Baba Israel moved to England to work as the Artistic Director and CEO of Contact- one of the worlds leading arts venues working with young people. Since returning to NYC in 2013 he has reunited with Duv and Yako 440 to launch a “new rare groove” project fusing poetic Hip Hop and soul vocals with Yako 440’s dub and funk influenced multi-instrumentalist production. They are currently in the studio finishing their debut album and bringing their high energy live show to venues across New York and beyond.
