EMERGING ARTIST SERIES: Esteban Castro

Music found Esteban at an early age. At four years old, his budding musical journey was transformed when a newly-rented piano pulled him away from his smaller musical toys and into the world of classical music. At age five, he channeled his continual experimentation into compositions that already revealed his old musical soul. While living in Paris at age six, Esteban was introduced to jazz by his teacher, pianist Jobic le Masson, and discovered in jazz the perfect outlet for composing “on the fly.” Living in the New York area since age seven, Esteban has shared the stage with world-class jazz musicians.

At age nine, Esteban recorded his Debut Album “In the Making,” a creative outlet for his original compositions, which earned him a Downbeat Magazine Award and an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. The album garnered critical acclaim for compositions “beaming with creative energies,” “surpassing all expectations,” and showing that, “while the pianist still might, in fact, be just a boy, he is already his own man.”

Shortly after recording his album, Esteban was accepted into the Manhattan School of Music conservatory at age nine, where he presently receives classical instruction from Phillip Kawin, and jazz from Jeremy Manasia. He also studies with pianist and composer Oscar Perez.

Now aged 11, Esteban often performs in and around New York, either as a soloist or with other talented musicians. He has also performed abroad in Italy, France and Puerto Rico.

Headlining at the Blue Note, Esteban’s debut solo performance will feature original compositions, including some that were composed when he was only six years old, along with originals dedicated to icons such as Chick Corea, Bill Evans, and Dizzy Gillespie.
