Arturo Sandoval @ Highline Ballroom
FEATURING:
Arturo Sandoval, trumpet & flugelhorn
Other musicians, TBA

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval has evolved into one of the world's most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist, and composer. One of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, he has been awarded six Grammy Awards and 12 total nominations. He has also received six Billboard Awards and one Emmy Award, the latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, For Love or Country (2000), starring Andy Garcia.

Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock, and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world in the '70s. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world, and continues to do so.

In addition to his performance efforts, Sandoval is a prominent educator. He spent a prosperous 19 years as a tenured professor of music at Florida International University, and he still maintains one of the most robust educational regimens in the music industry, complete with instructional books, master classes, private lessons, and an Artist-in-Residence program. He is also an accomplished composer and a renowned classical musician, performing regularly with leading symphony orchestras from around the world.

Sandoval's versatility is evident on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart, and Alicia Keys. His 2010 album Time for Love enjoyed three Grammy nominations and won two for Best Album and Best Production. In May of this year, he released his latest effort, Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You), and he's currently at work on a book chronicling his relationship with Dizzy Gillespie, along with an album titled Tangos.

Those who have heard his live performances or his recordings, read his books, benefitted from his teaching, or simply spent time with him, know that Sandoval is more than a technical virtuoso. He is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant, multifaceted, and renowned musicians of our time.
