Jazz pianist Kuni Mikami has been a professional musician for almost 40 years. A native of Japan, he moved to New York City in 1975 and quickly began sharing the stage with artists like Illinois Jacquet, Dakota Staton, Melba Joyce, and Queen Esther Marrow. He toured with The Duke Ellington Orchestra in Europe and Asia and regularly played with the group at Birdland for eight years. He also performed with the Cab Calloway Orchestra.
Mikami's first major debut on the American jazz scene was in 1991, when he received a call from the jazz legend Lionel Hampton. Performing and touring across the country and overseas with Hampton and other extraordinary talents, he became well established as an international jazz pianist. In recent years, he has performed with his own groups in numerous major New York venues, including the Blue Note, The Kitano, Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and The Town Hall.
