Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards

At the Jazz Journalists Association Awards Gala here at the Blue Note on June 20, Josh Jackson of WBGO's "The Checkout" will preside as emcee, and a who's-who of the jazz world will be on hand as winners of the 40 categories of Jazz Awards are announced. This year, writer Albert Murray is being honored with the infrequently-bestowed "Words and Music" award, co-presented by the Jazz Journalists Association and the Jazz Foundation of America. In addition, two New York jazz heroes, Robin Bell-Stevens of Jazzmobile and Adrian Ellis, formerly of Jazz at Lincoln Center, are also being honored at the gala.

Musical entertainment at the gala will include Organ Monk, Greg Lewis's Hammond-B4 quartet with guitarist Ron Jackson, drummer Jeremy Clemons, and tenor saxophonist Reggie Woods. Vocalist Paulette McWilliams and pianist Nat Adderley Jr. will perform a song from McWilliams's debut album Telling Stories, and double-necked guitar discovery Gabriel Marin will share his own brand of 21st century sci-fi/Middle Eastern funk-fusion in duet with bassist John Ferrara (both of the power-jazz trio Consider the Source).

Tonight's event marks the 16th Annual JJA Jazz Awards presentation, and the event has earned its reputation as one of the best jazz hangs and schmooze fests anywhere. At this year's gala, there will be plenty of time to socialize and enjoy complimentary wine, beer, and Brother Thelonious ale, as well as waters, soft drinks, and hors d'oeuvres. Other drinks will be available at the cash bar.

So whether you are a 2012 Award nominee, a jazz industry activist or influencer, a musician, a jazz educator or media member, or simply a jazz supporter or fan, you shouldn't miss this once-a-year event, jazz's only independent, international, community-wide celebration. Space is limited and time is running out, so get your tickets now! Nominee tickets are free, JJA Members and Nominee Representatives receive a discount. If you already have your ticket, thanks!
