Aruán Ortiz Trio
FEATURING:
Aruán Ortiz, piano
Bill McHenry, saxophone
Matt Penman, bass
Eric McPherson, drums

Aruán Ortiz hit the ground running when he burst onto the American jazz scene in 2003. A classically trained violist and pianist, this Santiago de Cuba native's sound is as marked by the influence of contemporary classical composers like Schoenberg, Ravel, and Copland as by traditional Afro-Cuban sounds and jazz greats Bud Powell, Art Tatum, and Thelonious Monk.

After launching his career in Europe by winning a string of awards in the early '00s, Ortiz has played steadily with Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney, Terri Lyne Carrington, Greg Osby, and Cindy Blackman, in addition to working with Esperanza Spalding, Gary Thomas, Wayne Krantz, Stefon Harris, George Garzone, and others. The latest release in his disocgraphy, which includes Aruán Ortiz Trio, Vol. 1 (2004) and Alameda (2009), is Santiarican Blues Suite, released earlier this year on Sunnysuide Records.
