Global film legend, Broadway musical producer, composer, author, and recording artist Melvin Van Peebles introduces his new band Laxative, comprised of members of Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber. In his rare performances with this group, the director of acclaimed film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971) shares songs he has penned, plus hilarious, tough-assed lessons picked up from his adventures on the road of life.
Van Peebles's unique narrative and singing style draw his audience into a world of hopes, chuckles, and hard knocks, with a blend of music ranging from blues and jazz to R&B and country. Ever a student of the human condition, his tunes capture the conversations, internal and external, one has paddling through life, trying to keep one's head above water.
When asked why the name Laxative, Van Peebles replied: "Why? ...'cause they're a crew of musicians who make sh.. happen and get sh.. done. That's why!"
